It’s one of those iconic symbols that everyone recognises. They are fun things to give to a loved one, table decorations or stuck to the front of a card. Unsurprisingly, you see a lot of origami hearts around the middle of February each year for Valentine’s Day. George Bernard Shaw, Irish Playwright An Origami Heart is not just for Valentine’s Day One is not to get your heart’s desire the other is to get it.” And you can always contact me for further advice or information.“Life contains but two tragedies. Learning alongside students can be just as rewarding, if not more so, and there are bound to be some young experts who would be more than happy to help out. So, I think that's most things covered! If you are toying with the idea of setting up a club I would strongly encourage you to take the plunge, even if you are someone with little previous folding experience. There are also lots of seasonal projects to fold at Christmas and Easter time, and making paper hearts for Valentine's Day always goes down well. Thus, if you prefer, you can refer to the idea of 'bases' as they arise naturally.įinally, it's a nice idea to theme your sessions: birds one week, flowers the next, paper planes the following (great fun!). However, this is not crucial step as students will meet these bases as they occur in the models you fold with them, and will begin to recognise them for themselves. These symbols are clearly explained here, and there's a handy printable version here.Īs students become more experienced you could, if you wish, introduce them to the most common origami bases. It is also a good idea to introduce students to the system of symbols used in folding instructions. (and this is also a good opportunity to reinforce some mathematical terminology). You can extend this to thirds and quarters etc. It is probably a good idea to devote an early session to practising accurate folding, perhaps by setting a challenge to see who can fold a square in half the most accurately along all four axes of symmetry. Encourage the more experienced to assist the beginners, and keep reinforcing the need for accuracy and crisp folds. Some will need hands-on help, while others will want to whizz ahead. I usually find that it is best to 'walk through' the instructions with the students by folding alongside them, step by step. The animations are accompanied by realistic paper-folding sound effects and a little cat that meows the instructions!įor more experienced folders, the Origami Resource Centre is a great source of inspiration and advice. Again, the folds are rated for difficulty, with five stars being the most difficult. is a Flash-based website with a good selection of animated instructions that can be paused and replayed. All folds are handily rated for difficulty with little pelican symbols, five pelicans being the most challenging. has a great selection of beginner projects accompanied by high-quality pdf instructions which can be projected or printed off for student reference. NB It's always best to practise the fold yourself beforehand! There are two websites that I find particularly useful when planning what to fold at Origami Club: and. This is especially important when folding modular units which will need to interlock firmly afterwards. Encourage students to run the side of their ruler firmly along their folded edges to achieve a good, crisp fold. I also find it useful to have a set of small rulers or set squares available to act as 'folding bones'. Others will need more guidance, and it is a good idea to have a simple fold or two planned each session to work on with these students. Some students will be keen to browse through these and choose projects to work on independently. These can be purchased second-hand on Amazon, Ebay or at charity shops and car boot sales. Source a range of four or five origami books so that you have a mini reference library. Students can then dig in and get folding as soon as they arrive. If possible choose a range of bright colours and prepare a good-sized selection of squares of different sizes beforehand (cut from A4, A5 and A6-sized sheets, say). Plain old A4 printer paper is just fine, although it will need trimming into squares for most designs - and don't discard the offcuts, make Cairo tiles with them instead! The good news is, you don't need expensive paper or specialist equipment to set up an origami club at your school.

We’ve seen great sales from other US-based electric bicycle companies lately too. Many people find their way onto their first electric bicycle thanks to Rad Power Bikes.īut they aren’t the only game in town. While Rad Power Bikes doesn’t try to compete with the higher quality $3,000+ e-bikes, the company is known for a good balance of price and performance, offering excellent value. In fact, the RadMission debuted at $999 before increasing to its MSRP of $1,099, so this sale brings the price down to even lower than its promotional debut price. While Rad Power Bikes does occasionally run sales, these are the best prices we’ve ever seen for these bikes. The RadMission, on the other hand, is better for efficient commuting on a lighter weight e-bike that feels more like a classic messenger bike.īoth are single-speed e-bikes, while the RadRover Step-Thru offers a 7-speed Shimano transmission. The RadRunner has smaller yet wider tires and is optimized for carrying cargo or passengers. Existing Rad Power Bikes customers can take advantage of accessory bundles that are up to 25% off during the sale, though the bundles are a while-supplies-last kind of situation so don’t dawdle!įor the discounted e-bikes, both the RadRunner and the RadMission offer speeds of up to 20 mph (32 km/h). Rad Power Bikes RadRover Step-ThruĪnd the deals aren’t only for new riders. I’ve reviewed this e-bike as well and it is a great option for a full-size fat tire e-bike that is still easy to mount (unlike most bulky fat tire e-bikes). Rad Power Bikes RadMissionĪnd lastly, you can also take $200 off the RadRover Step-Thru Bundle when purchasing with accessories. It’s the only model from Rad Power Bikes that doesn’t come with a kickstand as standard equipment. The company is also offering $200 off the RadMission Bundle when you purchase it with accessories.įor that one, you’ll definitely want the kickstand as part of the bundle. See Rad Power Bikes’ Black Friday sales page here. Read our RadWagon 4 Review and our RadRover 6 Plus Review to see our daily riders. I happen to have tested both and you can’t go wrong with either bike at those price points.īut only suckers pay MSRP, right?! In another, they illustrate proper ways of interviewing for a job over the phone. In one session (which serves as the film’s hilarious opening), they demonstrate sexual boundaries by a ridiculous scenario set on an imaginary dance floor. Instead, Sharrock insists that the joke’s on the locals of “Limbo,” oblivious to their own privileges particularly two cultural integration teachers, Helga ( Sidse Babett Knudsen) and Boris ( Kenneth Collard), tasked to educate a couple of dozen young men like Omar on Western societal etiquette. Sharrock’s greatest feat here is using all these absurdist touches towards achieving a sensitive, reflective sort of humor-think of something in the vein of “ The Band’s Visit,” but directed by Yorgos Lanthimos-without making Omar and his mates the butt of the joke. In unison, these elements serve as constant reminders of emptiness that advance the severity of Omar’s emotional estrangement. In that regard, Andy Drummond’s attentive production design and Nick Cooke’s shrewd cinematography accentuate the barrenness of Omar’s surroundings, like the barely furnished temporary apartment he shares with his Freddy Mercury fan roommate Farhad (a gentle and amiable Vikash Bhai), the hardly stocked grocery shop he patronizes, the bleak landscape that envelops it all. Through various sweetly observant scenes, Sharrock constructs a complex portrayal of Omar that both rises him above his austere circumstance, and blends him into it with distinctive care. And on another, mutual worries about the future of their family take over the long-distance chat. On one day, we hear him get the recipe of his favorite native dish featuring spices like sumac, near-impossible to obtain on the island. Throughout “Limbo,” Sharrock disperses Omar’s moving conversations with his mom like cadences of a musical arrangement. With his family scattered to different locations-his parents are in Istanbul and his brother, still back in Syria to be a part of the resistance-Omar often gazes into empty space with a tint of nostalgia and hangs out with his similarly placeless companions, when he doesn’t visit the town’s sole phone booth to call his family. Despite being unable to play it due to a combination of fear and a mysterious hand injury, the young man carries his grandfather’s oud around dutifully like an extension of his body. A gifted musician back in Syria virtuosic with the strings of an oud, Omar spends his days in an in-between state just like the rest of the refugees stationed at the weird, cut-off seaside outpost. In the lead is Omar, played by a terrific, misty-tempered Amir El-Masry who wears the kind of melancholy Sharrock is after on his sleeve like a second skin. "Limbo" creates an earned sense of hazy sadness, specific to its desolate locale and the persons that inhabit it. Through a refreshing narrative angle that maintains its tight and modest focus on alienation, a thematic resolve supported by thoughtful visual compositions that prioritize negative space and isolation, Sharrock unearths the many absurdities of misplacement with great perceptiveness. It just engages with its characters’ pain differently than you might expect. It’s not that “Limbo” ignores despair altogether or dismisses the spiritual hurt that its displaced human beings, stuck on a remote Scottish island while awaiting resolution on their asylum cases, experience day in and day out. Indeed, within the world of movies that unfold around the international refugee crisis-a long catalog of features and non-fiction films of late that liberally and perhaps unavoidably lean into physical and psychological suffering-Sharrock’s tale feels almost like a small miracle with its defiant stance against exploitative hopelessness. But with his sophomore feature “ Limbo,” a humanistic, tenderly deadpan plunge into the psyche of a Syrian refugee, Scottish writer/director Ben Sharrock sidesteps potential hazards like a patronizing tone and cultural insensitivity with deft, delivering something insightful, genuine, and universally relatable. Trying for comedy inside the margins of the migrant crisis is playing with fire. In scientific terms, Escape from Tomorrow leaves an ajar door concerning whether its visitors are causes of the empire, or effects. His concept of observing the Disney empire’s entrapment of imagination is flimsy as well, as numerous theme parks share the same mission of selling fantasy to their visitors (from New Hampshire’s StoryLand to South Carolina’s uber-racist South of the Border). Moore’s film is replete with artistic kneejerk criticisms to the experience of Disney, a dream-catcher-recording of the nightmares he must have had after the first time he stepped into Magic Kingdom as a father, and not a child. Escape from Tomorrow, while placing its average family into recognizable Disney rides and characters, is malleable to the experience of any populated attraction that can shine the worst in its visitors. Those venturing into this movie for some Disney damning should know that Escape from Tomorrow ain’t no Blackfish, referring to the recent documentary that gave a Kevin-Bacon-in Tremors-esque “F**************k yooouuu!” to SeaWorld with scandalous recounts followed up by direct indictments. A handful of bizarre events later, and Escape from Tomorrow becomes an acid trip that really takes off in the third act, where its Disney-venting shoots up into the artsy stratosphere. Later, he runs into a woman, who may or may not be a wicked witch, who advises him that the turkey is made from emu. He has visions of demonic faces while riding “It’s a Small World,” and gawks at the same two young French girls who constantly cross his path. While taking their kids on various rides, Jim’s mind goes elsewhere. Jim (Roy Arbamsohn) is dad to two innocent blonde kids (Katelyn Rodriguez and Jack Dalton), and husband to shrewd spouse Emily (Elena Schuber) who treats him as a third child. And yet, almost a year after premiering to the world via Sundance, M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E remains silent, the film finally being distributed to audiences who have no clue what kind of ride Moore is going to take them on.Įscape from Tomorrow borrows from the beginning of a hundred million other vacations: a generic family of four staying at a hotel on the Disney premises, their last day of theme park attendance upon them. Captured in black-and-white using cameras that look like any regular tourist tool, the project had a severely vulnerable existence which could have been canceled in one phone call, at any point in its filmmaking process. Here’s your WTF movie of 2013 – new writer/director Randy Moore’s daring Escape from Tomorrow, a bizarre psychological nightmare about visiting Walt Disney World, as shot on Disney land with zero permission. The frozen mango alone will not be enough. If serving frozen, blend with ice for the perfect texture. Frozen mango chunks make this task even easier and contribute to the consistency. These mango margaritas can also be served frozen for a delicious pureed margarita. I like to purchase a few and test them out in case I end up with a dud. Some taste like a bell pepper while others have some pronounced heat. Just to note, not all jalapenos are created equal. If you prefer more pronounced heat, shake the jalapenos slices with the cocktails in the shaker to fully infuse the cocktail with more jalapeno spice. If you simply use jalapeno as a garnish alone, the overall spice will be subtle and the jalapenos will slowly add heat to the drink as you sip it. This cocktail pairs really nicely with a few fresh jalapeno slices. The mango will need to be blended into a smooth and creamy sauce so that it easily mixes into the cocktail. If you don’t have access to fresh mango, you can also substitute frozen mango chunks. I’m typically against artificial flavors or sweeteners, but the right purree works well with the cocktail and saves you the need for a blender. While I prefer freshly blended mango (it’s certainly healthier and more authentic), I also enjoy the simplicity and flavor of a quality store-bought mango puree. It’s constructed from your typical margarita with the right balance of simple sugar, fresh mango, lime juice, and triple sec. My mango margarita recipe was actually born on the beach in the Outer Banks in North Carolina. It’s an amazing fruit and feels so tropical and fresh. The soldering station I use myself is a Weller WS1010 which costs $175,. I do recommend you get a soldering station instead of a soldering iron, because of the higher quality and better temperature control. Learning to solder is also a lot easier with a good quality soldering iron. This is not a tool to be cheap about as a good solder connection will make your gear last a lifetime and it saves you a lot of time troubleshooting bad solder joints. By heating the component and applying solder you make a super-strong mechanical and electrical connection to the PCB. The number one tool you need is a soldering iron. Compare it with learning to play guitar on a Walmart guitar that makes your fingers bleed and lose motivation after a couple of weeks instead of spending a bit more money and playing guitar for the rest of your life. I remember switching from a cheap $30 soldering iron to a $175 Weller and the difference was night and day. I do advise you to go for quality over quantity as this will make your builds much easier. There is a handful of tools you need to get started building your own DIY audio gear. What tools do I need for building audio kits? Compared to unobtainable vintage gear you can sometimes save 5x to 10x as much. With commercial products, you not only pay for assembly but also for research cost and of course brand value.īy building your own gear, you save a huge amount of money. Soldering and assembling audio equipment takes a lot of time. One of the biggest cost factors of audio gear is labor. Why build my own gear?īesides the huge learning experience and the possibilities of repairing and modding your own gear later down the line, building your own gear also saves a ton of money. This eventually allows you to repair your own broken equipment, saving even more money in the long run. The more kits you build, the more you learn about electronics as well. You do need some basic tools to build these kits but consider this a one-time investment. Electrical components need to be soldered to the PCB with a soldering iron, which takes some practice but can be learned by everyone.Īll audio kits come with detailed instructions and photos, making them easier to assemble than your average Ikea closet. The designs are made to sound as close to the original as possible, sometimes even using original components. You buy a complete kit with a PCB (Printed Circuit Board), all the components required to complete the build, and a case. These kits are basically the audio variant of Lego. There are numerous websites that offer DIY audio kits. And it’s not difficult to build either! How to get started with DIY audio gear What if I told you that you don’t need to sell your house to acquire some of the most wanted vintage audio equipment? Thanks to a community of audio engineers around the world it’s now possible to create your own affordable vintage gear. Even though the quality of plugins keeps getting better, sometimes owning an analog hardware device just adds some mojo that you can’t get out of a piece of software. One quick glance at the price of an original version, however, makes you glad we have access to plugins now. Every music producer or audio engineer dreams of one day owning a vintage LA2A, 1176 1073, or any other classic unit. |
